Another Installment from Dick Nelson.

Another Installment  from Dick Nelson. Some thoughts to ponder.  Maybe some to debate.  Your remarks are most welcomed!

During the so called “Progressive Era” our Constitution took a beating. Social movements gave us the 16 Amendment that was  ratified February 3, 1913 giving the Congress the power to “lay and collect taxes on incomes”.  A particularly cold and blustery day, some thought that Hell might have actually frozen.

A couple of months later when the election of U.S. Senators was taken away from the various States and given to the “dumb masses” by the ratification of the 17th Amendment on April 8, 1913 the decline of a representative democracy and our freedoms was well underway.

Now every leech and freeloader in the country (ignorant though they may be) has a direct say in the election of member of the upper house of Congress, greatly enabling the work of special interest lobbyists.  Now the Congress could (and has ever since) enacted law after law to give special benefits (called loopholes) to special interest groups.   Congress can (and has) changed the amount of income tax a person or group pays by simply enacting another loophole or readjusting “tax brackets”  in order to fund one project or another.

Rather than present a full page of quotes about  how Income Tax came to be, I refer you to Heritage Guide to the Constitution  http://www.heritage.org/constitution#!/amendments/16/essays/177/income-tax

In my opinion, the 16th amendment should be repealed and the Fair Tax  Bill (HR25/S13) enacted to provide a near equal amount of revenue for the Federal Government, thus eliminating all possibilities of special benefits for special interests.

Every American Citizen and every visitor making a purchase in the US would pay the “Fair Tax”.

Because politicians know the Fair Tax would effectively prevent   kickbacks, political travel junkets and political favors, our elected representatives have not embraced the “Fair Tax”.  They have instead talked about such things as “Flat Tax, “9-9-9” Tax plan, Tax Code reviews, and streamlining the current tax system.  NONE OF THESE SCHEMES ELIMINATE PERSONAL AND BUSINESS INCOME TAXES. THEY SIMPLY ADD ADDITIONAL TAXES.

The “Fair Tax Bill”

  • Eliminates all personal and business income taxes, payroll, estate and capital gains taxes.
  • Creates jobs and restores “Made in America” label by making U.S. products more competitive.
  • Raises real wages over 10% in the first year.
  • Saves Americans $400 billion wasted yearly complying with 72,000 pages of tax regulations.
  • Lowers tax rates for all Americans.
  • Captures taxes from the underground economy.
  • Provides monthly “prebate” payments to all legal American households to offset taxes on necessities.
  • End the sale of tax favors to the rich, politically connected and special interest lobbying groups.
  • Grow the economy by billions of dollars.
  • Add trillions of US and foreign dollars to our economy by making America the place  to invest.
  • Secure funding for Social Security and Medicare with a larger and more stable tax base.
  • Raise the same revenue as the current system.
  • Lower production costs by removing business taxes, compliance and avoidance expenses, now hidden
  • Eliminate the IRS and be collected by the states.

I have contacted my representatives in Congress and ask that they cosponsor and support the passage of the nonpartisan  “Fair Tax” bill (H25/S13) and the repeal of the 16th amendment.  I hope that you will also.

Thank you,

Dick Nelson

The “Middle Wife” by an Anonymous 2nd grade teacher.

This story is hilarious!

The “Middle Wife” by an Anonymous 2nd grade teacher.

I’ve been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids myself, but the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own second grade classroom a few years back. When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell. So I always have a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and usually, show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model airplanes, pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it in to school and talk about it, they’re welcome.

Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow stuffed under her sweater. She holds up a snapshot of an infant. ‘This is Luke, my baby brother, and I’m going to tell you about his birthday.’ ‘First, Mom and Dad made him as a symbol of their love, and then Dad put a seed in my Mom’s stomach, and Luke grew in there. He ate for nine months through an umbrella cord.’ She’s standing there with her hands on the pillow, and I’m trying not to laugh and wishing I had my camcorder with me. The kids are watching her in amazement.

‘Then, about two Saturdays ago, my Mom starts going, ‘Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh!’ Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. ‘She walked around the house for, like an hour, ‘Oh, oh, oh!’ (Now this kid is doing a hysterical duck walk and groaning.) ‘My Dad called the middle wife. She delivers babies, but she doesn’t have a sign on the car like the Domino’s man. They got my Mom to lie down in bed like this.’ (Then Erica lies down with her back against the wall.) ‘And then, pop! My Mom had this bag of water she kept in there in case he got thirsty, and it just blew up and spilled all over the bed, like psshhheew!’ (This kid has her legs spread with her little hands miming water flowing away. It was too much!) ‘Then the middle wife starts saying ‘push, push,’ and ‘breathe, breathe. They started counting, but never even got past ten. Then, all of a sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff that they all said it was from Mom’s play-center, so there must be a lot of toys inside there. When he got out, the middle wife spanked him for crawling up in there in the first place.’

Then Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her seat. I’m sure I applauded the loudest.

Ever since then, when it’s Show-and-tell day, I bring my camcorder, just in case another ‘Middle Wife’ comes along.

Take a look at what people are saying on the “Politics” page.

Dick Nelson and I have been exchanging emails concerning various aspects of politics. I think we all agree that there are some serious ills that our nation faces.  As years pass, each seems to be getting worse, not better.

I thought it might be a good idea to have folks from the “Crew” participate by reading the  posts commenting on the posts and even writing thoughtful arguments and articles.

Dick has recently shared a thought concerning the 17th amendment suggesting that we might be better off had it not been ratified and implemented.  Take a look and please comment.
